Community connectedness and community capacity building are a priority for ICOPE as both are essential for creating a resilient, self-reliant and thriving community. When both are strongly present in a community they improve the overall quality of life, safety and well-being of individuals and empower them to actively participate in shaping their collective future.
When a community is well-connected and has built its capacity it is better prepared to respond to disasters and emergencies and residents are more likely to cooperate and assist each other during times of crisis, making the community more resilient.
Community capacity building often involves sharing knowledge and expertise and this can result in a more informed community, capable of addressing various challenges and making informed decisions. Capacity building ensures that all community members, including vulnerable populations, are included in the planning and response efforts. This promotes a more equitable and just community. A community that has built its capacity is less reliant on external assistance. This self-sufficiency empowers residents to take control of their own well-being and future.
ICOPE encourages the community to be involved in the activities and events that it plans for the community, ranging from community parties, morning teas, community meetings, guest speakers, mental health and well-being programs and various training opportunities.
